First invented in 1907, plastic is present in everything and is one of the cheaper materials that’s used in everyday life. However, the lack of sustainable plastic waste management (PWM) has posed a serious threat to our environment and natural ecosystem globally. As per the official sources, around 8.3 billion metric tonnes (BMTs) of plastic had been produced globally between 1950 to 2015, and of this, 80 per cent 6.3 BMTs was accounted as plastic waste. Also, according to a report on PWM released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the global average of plastic per capita consumption is 28 kg and India has a per capita plastic consumption of 11 kg. The Central Pollution Control Bureau (CPCB) Report for the year 2019-20 states that 3.4 million metric tonnes of plastic waste are generated in India annually. (Images courtesy: iStock)

Now, this has led to a serious issue and to tackle the same, The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, on 12th August 2021 that prohibits the use of single use plastic items, which have low utility and high littering potential, from 1st July 2022. Pertaining to this notification, the new rules have come into force and the government is quite strict about it. Read more to know about all the things made with single-use plastic that have been banned in India.

From July 1, 2022, India has banned the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of identified single use plastic items, which have low utility and high littering potential, all across the country. As part of this ban, the items that have been banned are - ice cream sticks; candy sticks; polythene bags; plastic plates; cups, glasses & cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw & trays made with plastic, wrapping films on sweet boxes, stirrers, wrapping/packaging films like cling wraps. Not just this, but ‘carry bags’ with 120 micron will also be banned by the end of this year.

Failing to adhere to these new rules laid out by the government, will attract punishment as per the Environment Protection Act of 1986, which implies that violators may face a jail term of up to five years or INR 1 lakh penalty or both.

In order to comply with this plastic ban, the government has urged everyone to use eco-friendly alternatives that can come in handy when going out for grocery shopping or using things in everyday life. People should buy more khadi/jute/cloth bags for their shopping needs. If you are someone who cannot do without the straws, then opt for steel/paper/bamboo straws that are easily available these days. For the plastic cutlery, there are quite a lot of eco-friendly options available like bamboo cutlery and leaf cutlery. In the case of ice cream sticks, you can think of cones or bricks that seem feasible as well. In place for water bottles, one can go for steel or copper flasks that keep the water cool as well.
